Iroko is extremely durable and resistant to termite and marine borer attack. Iroko is substituted for Teak in many applications since it performs just as well and is less expensive. WORKING PROPERTIES: General finishing rated as good. Sapwood is clearly distinct and prevalent even in highest grades. WORKING PROPERTIES: General finishing is rated as excellent. Carves, glues, moulds, planes, nails, screws and turns with ease. WORKING PROPERTIES: Works well with most tools, resin can gum up and clod sandpaper. A hard and durable timber with high bending and crushing strength. Timber is stable after drying and undergoes very little dimensional change in response to atmospheric conditions. WORKING PROPERTIES: Glues, moulds, sands, screws and turns well. Resists splitting but care needs to be taken when planning. Widely distributed throughout Malaysia and Indonesia although the resource is not large, and worldwide demand high. Vessels can be filled with a yellowish/ white deposit. WORKING PROPERTIES: Bores, carves, glues, moulds, planes, sands and screws with good results. The grain of Obeche is interlocked and texture medium/coarse. The timber is considered too soft for general joinery use, but it is highly suitable for small accurate mouldings. WORKING PROPERTIES: Carves, glues, screws and sands well. Cutting edges should be kept very sharp when working end-grain material since it has a tendency to crumble and chip at tool exits. The wood is described as non-descript, and acts as a very good medium for staining and dyeing. Wood with narrow growth rings are quite uniform while those with wider rings are often uneven in texture. Oregon is naturally durable and resistant to termite attack. Excellent stability in service, can split when bending. WORKING PROPERTIES: Machines well but difficult to work with hand tools. The grain of Sapele is figured, interlocked and irregular. Poor bending qualities but considered stronger than Khaya. Well-defined, yellow-white, pinkish to light brown. WORKING PROPERTIES: Fairly difficult to work with hand tools. A reduced cutting angle is recommended when moulding and planing as Sapele tends to tear when interlocked grain is present. Painting, polishing and staining yields good results.
