Situated in Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu-Natal, the Tatham Art Gallery serves the Msunduzi region through the Visual Arts. This eclectic display of British, French and South African art works spans more than three centuries. Still Life with Omega Flowers (1919), by the English artist Roger Fry, was purchased in London for the Gallery’s collection in These potteries, of which few still operate, played an important part in South African society between the two World Wars. Viewers interested in the history of design will find a fascinating fusion of European and African influences. The Tatham Art Gallery has an extensive Education and Outreach programme, including art classes for the youth, Art Educator training, an Artist’s Forum and Lectures and talks. Throughout the year various lectures and talks take place in the Gallery’s well equipped Lecture Theatre. The FOTAG Committee invites all artists to start planning for the Fabulous Picture Show, an annual auction held in the Gallery to raise funds for the purchase of new art works for the Tatham Art Gallery’s permanent collection. You are welcome to come in and browse in our Shop, which is stocked with quality craft primarily from makers in KwaZulu-Natal. These include traditional and contemporary ceramics, beadwork, jewellery, carved, beaded and embroidered objects, and many more items. The peaceful surroundings offer a welcome break for visitors. Delicious, freshly made tea-time treats, the best cappuccino in town, daily specials and light meals are on offer. Each screening is preceded by a short introduction that draws viewers’ attention to the salient aspects of the film they are about to view. In addition to the regular concerts, there is an exciting line up for this quarter. The Friends of the Tatham Art Gallery (FOTAG) is a body of friends and volunteers that supports the Tatham Art Gallery, mainly through fund-raising events, which include Quiz evenings, the annual Fabulous Picture Show and a variety of concerts.
