Stowell & Co has for a number of years had an active Affirmative Procurement policy. The firm currently has one Black male Director and two Indian female Directors. It is a policy that the firm employs two new Candidate Attorneys each year, of which at least one will be a previously disadvantaged person. More than fifty percent of our staff are from previously disadvantaged groups. Stowell & Co has fully and timeously complied with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act. Every Director and staff member has a Personal Computer on his/her desk, which is connected to a Local Area Network equipped with state-of-the-art Windows-based software with permanent e-mail and Internet facilities. All staff are trained in the use of their specific application software, and general computer literacy training is ongoing. The Company is linked to the national Deeds Registry computer system through Windeed Search which enables us to conduct electronic searches of all Deeds Registries in South Africa. We are able to track matters through the registration process by way of the Deeds Office Tracking System (DoTS). The building, which is a Listed Building and which has won a number of architectural awards, is wholly owned by the Company. The building is ideally situated, being diagonally opposite the Deeds Registry, the Surveyor General's Office, the High Court and the Magistrate's Court. Our offices are also very close to the Master of the High Court, and the Sheriffs of both the High and the Magistrates' Courts. Over its more than sixty years of practice, the firm has grown from a single practitioner establishment to an Incorporated Company of twelve Directors, two Associates, two Consultants,and several Professional Assistants and Candidate Attorneys. The Partnership became an Incorporated Company in 1996, and can be considered to be one of the largest KwaZulu-Natal legal practices outside of Durban. The Company currently consists of thirteen Directors and one Practicing Consultant. Without exception, each Director has risen through the ranks from Articled Clerk to Professional Assistant to Director. In 1978 he was admitted as an Attorney and Conveyancer, and as a partner of Stowell & Co in He was admitted as an Attorney and Conveyancer in 1983, and as a partner of Stowell & Co later that same year. Neil Bailey Painter Neil Bailey Painter (Financial Institution Conveyancing) graduated from the University of Natal with a BA LLB and was admitted as an Attorney and Conveyancer in John Frank Dale John Frank Dale (Debt Recoveries) graduated from the University of Natal with a BA LLB in He commenced articles with Stowell & Co in 1998 and was admitted as Attorney in Deborah Lynn Khan Deborah Lynn Khan (Debt Recoveries) graduated with a B Soc Sci from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg in 1993, and with LLB from the same University in On admission, each Director starts on a lower percentage ownership interest, and works up to the maximum level, equal to the most senior Directors, over a period of ten years. However, management and voting is equal from the moment of admission.
