Growers, millers and hauliers from all 14 South African sugar mills attended, as well as interested parties, such as engineers and vehicle truck designers. The workshop ended with all parties visiting the Umdloti Traffic Control Centre to observe the weighing of tractors and heavy vehicles used in the sugarcane industry. The workshop enjoyed representations from a diverse range of stakeholders, especially from the Car Carriers Association of South Africa, with whom a separate meeting was held after the workshop. Attending delegates benefited from the informative presentations and more than one discussion centred on the nuts and bolts of the implementation of RTMS. All in all, another successful workshop was concluded on a positive note. The workshop was attended by a range of diverse stakeholders from industry, representing consignees, consignors, operators, road authorities, TRAC, the insurance industry, vehicle manufacturers, logistics consultants and the SABS. Rocky Smith gave an impression of RTMS accreditation from an operator’s outlook. The stakeholders were given an opportunity at the end of the workshop to ask questions. There were positive sentiments echoed from all stakeholders regarding the significant benefits of embracing RTMS, although there are still some operational challenges when implementing RTMS.
