As part of our mandate of Tourism Development, we identified skills development as key mechanism to drive sector quality and transformation. This in turn means that there will be an even greater entry field of athletes and much more at stake as the previous champions were crowned in Pietermaritzburg has featured as a venue on the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup calendar for the past two years, when the 2015 and 2016 editions made a stop in South Africa as part of the series each year. The continued support of KwaZulu-Natal Sport and Recreation and Msunduzi Municipality, partnering with Cycling South Africa, has been fundamental in hosting these top-notch events. The magnitude of the event once again cements the potential that the city has to offer cycling, and shows the commitment of local government to the development of the sport of cycling in KwaZulu-Natal. The following events are an indication of the diverse and interesting functions and entertainment taking place in Pietermaritzburg on an on-going basis. Participation and spectator interests range from mountain bike racing, triathlons and tennis tournaments to antique fairs, business-to-business networks and choir competitions. Annual sporting events, festivals and outdoor shows draw visitors to the city every year and there is something different on offer every month. Active Escapes offers bespoke adventure holidays, nature getaways and special-interest tours and safaris. The KZN Railway Museum restores old steam trains and offers both scheduled and chartered train rides in the area. The city is host to a number of cricket clubs, some of which contest the highly competitive Inter-City League. Ten immaculately maintained bowling greens makes Pietermaritzburg a favourite bowls destination, attested to by the number of national tournaments staged in the city. This popular and social sport is played indoors by teams of six. The level of competition is determined by the players, while the fun factor is guaranteed. A gentle sport with not-so-gentle tactics, was first played in France over 200 years ago. Whether you prefer road or mountain bikes, you’ll just love the challenge in the variety of terrain in our city, plus the added bonus of the scenic surrounds. Take your pick, from lucky dipping along Camp’s Drift, to bass fishing in the generous Albert Falls dam or pursuing trout. There’s a gym or three in the city to make sure you stay in shape while away from home. A surprising array of martial arts are practiced in the city, including taichi, karate, judo, and taibo. The quest of serenity is practiced at various venues in the city, catering for the different needs of adherents.
